Classroom Guidance Lessons:

Kindergarten- Through Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum students will increase their ability to identify their own and others' feelings, learn to recognize strong feelings and learn strategies for calming themselves down and problem solving. 

First Grade- Through Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum students will increase their ability to identify their own and others' feelings, take others' perspectives, and respond empathically to others.  Students will practice calming down and problem solving.  Students will focus on reducing angry behavior by teaching them to recognize feelings of anger, use anger-reduction techniques, and apply problem solving in anger situation. 

Second Grade- Through Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum students will increase their ability to identify their own and others' feelings, take others' perspectives, and respond empathically to others.  Students will practice calming down and problem solving.  Students will focus on reducing angry behavior by teaching them to recognize feelings of anger, use anger-reduction techniques, and apply problem solving in anger situation.  Finally, students will understand what bullying is and how to recognize it.  

Third Grade- Students will learn to recognize conflict and ways to resolve it positively.  Through Steps to Respect: A Bullying Prevention Program students will define respect and bullying.  Students will learn to recognize bullying, identify and apply assertiveness skills to refuse bullying, and learn bullying reporting skills.  

Fourth Grade- In an effort to meet Pennsylvania's Career Education and Work Standards students will focus on career readiness skills.  Students will complete a self assessment and interest assessment, explore and research careers, analyze work habits, and create a resume.  Students will also define entrepreneurship and complete an entrepreneurship project.  Through the support of Millersburg Communities That Care and Dauphin County funding, students will complete the Botvin Life Skills Training.  Students will learn about self-esteem, decision-making, stress, communication skills, social skills, and assertiveness.  

Fifth Grade- With the support of Millersburg Communities That Care, Dauphin County funding, and our local Rotary Club students will complete a Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program.  The prevention program consists of the Too Good for Drugs curriculum, community speakers, and a field trip to the Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center.  Students will learn about goal setting, decision making, identifying and managing emotions, effective communication, relationships, managing mistakes, peer-pressure refusal, and the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use.
