5th grade Reading Learning Support:
Course Description/Expections:
Students will read in class several fiction and non-fiction books to build fluency. What is read in class will be assigned to re-read at home for homework. Students should read with/to someone at home so that errors in reading can be corrected.
Pair-it books (One fiction and one non-fiction focusing on the same topic/theme) will be read to build fluency and build comprehension, as well.
Wilson Reading program is used to build fluency by focusing on decoding skills. Wilson is used to increase encoding skills (spelling).
Strategic Intervention stories, leveled readers, and other 4th grade level short stories will be used to improve reading skills and comprehension. They will learn to make predictions about what will happen next in the story and will also be able to retell including key details and important information in the story. Students will be encouraged to visualize what they are reading and writing about, to make connections between stories, and to ask questions about what they read.
Vocabulary is given and tested every two weeks. A vocabulary quiz and reading test are given every two weeks as well.
Close reading strategies will be used with students learning annotating marks to delve deeper into the story to find deeper meaning and understanding,
The students will participate and preform in a play.
