Introduction to Music Theory is a focus on the working components of music, which serves as a springboard for

students wanting to further their understanding of the intricate workings of music, or for those planning to

continue their study of music after high school in a collegiate setting. For college bound students, this course

will prepare the student so that he/she will be most familiar with the concepts taught in level one written and

aural theory course. Topics to be focused upon in this course include a deep understanding of

rhythm, note names, pitch identification, key and time signatures, meter and intervals.

Major and minor tonality, chord building, harmonization and simple melody writing

is also introduced and practiced.

Students will be required to do some singing in class. Aural training, sight-singing, solfeggio, and melodic and rhythmic dictation are also a component of this course. Students will be given the opportunity to listen and experience samples of all styles as well as take notes leading to discussion. The Pennsylvania State Standards for the Arts and Humanities are used as a guide in developing pertinent and relevant content in conjunction with the Millersburg Area School District Music Curriculum.

This course will be taught through teacher presentation, online learning, in-class discussion, handouts and worksheets.

This course utilizes Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory Online, and www.musictheory.net.

Students are expected to have their music handout binder, notebook and a pencil with them for every class.

This folder/binder is to contain every handout given to the student at all times. Again, students are also expected to bring a regular, no. 2 pencil to take notes and to use when completing homework.

Pen or colored pencil is not acceptable in music writing.

Quizzes and exams will be given regularly. Often a brief comprehensive quiz is given following the

introduction of a concept to allow students an opportunity to practice the concept. Major (end of unit) exams

are announced to the student to allow appropriate study and practice time. Content for exams will be taken from class discussion, handouts, online lessons, classroom activities, and notes placed on the board.

Occasional homework is given to help reinforce new and challenging concepts. As with learning an instrument

or singing in a choir, regular practice is a must to attain an understanding and proficiency.

Evaluation of the student occurs on many different levels. The following is a breakdown on what criteria is used to calculate the student’s final grade. 

• Attendance (timeliness to class) and Classroom Participation (Ability to follow rules, volunteering answers, paying attention, cooperation)

• Folder (neatness,completeness)

• Quizzes

• Tests

The following procedures have been designed to enhance the music education of the music theory student.

1. Enter the room on time.

2. Leave all gum, food and drinks outside the classroom area.

3. Be sure to have all your materials before class begins.

4. Be polite while the teacher is speaking or instructing.

5. When another student is asked to speak, continue to be polite

6. Follow directions the first time...it makes things easier.

Procedure Consequences for inability to follow instructions:

1. Verbal Warning

2. Consultation time with Mr. Campbell (in the band room) and a phone call placed to your parents

3. Detention and a phone call placed to your parents

4. Visit with the principal (and/or conference with parents and principal)
