Musical Theatre (elective)

Prerequisites:
An interest in musical theatre, acting, public performance, and/or theatre technical skills such
as make-up, sound, lights, set design and construction.

Skills:
Listening, analysis,creativity,application, critical thinking.

Purpose:
In this class, students will explore how various musical theatre forms from a variety of cultures and genres contributed to the creation of one of the most complex and quintessentially American forms of art - the
American Musical Theatre. Topics such as acting, improvisation, auditioning, direction, production, technical
crew responsibilities, history and the future of musical theatre will be explored. Time will be spent working first-hand on the current theatrical production of the music department during class time.

Description:
Students will examine how musical theatre has reflected and contributed to the social fabric and culture of the United States from the 17th through the 21st centuries. The course will identify and discuss the contributions of the major artists and productions which have made a significant impact on the development of the American musical theatre. Students will not only study about the musical but experience first-hand the world of the musical performer. In addition, this course will provide coaching and information designed for the improvement of each student’s vocal preparation, audition skills and performance.

Course Materials:
This course will be taught through teacher presentation,music listening, video presentations,class discussion,
hands-on applications, handouts and worksheets. There is no formal textbook at this time.
Students are expected to have their music handout binder, notebook and a pencil or pen with them for every
class. This folder/binder is to contain every handout given to the student at all times.

Quizzes and Exams:
A majority of the student grade will come from class participation. It is expected that students contribute to
class discussion, share ideas and thoughts as well as ask questions. Quizzes and exams may be given on occasion. Often a brief comprehensive quiz is given following the introduction of a concept to allow students an opportunity to practice the concept.
Homework may also be given.
Major (end of unit) exams are announced to the student to allow appropriate study time. Content for exams will be taken from class discussion, handouts, classroom activities, and notes placed on the board.


Assessment & Evaluation:
Evaluation of the student occurs on many different levels. The following is a breakdown on what percentage
each portion of evaluation applies towards the student’s final grade.

Classroom Guidelines:
The following procedures have been designed to enhance the music education of the music theory student.
1. Enter the room on time.
2. Leave all gum, food and open drinks outside the classroom area.
3. Be sure to have all your materials before class begins.
4. Be polite while the teacher is speaking or instructing.
5. When another student is asked to speak, continue to be polite.
6. Follow directions the first time...it makes things easier.

Procedure Consequences for inability to follow instructions:
1.Verbal Warning
2.Consultation time with the teacher (in the band room) and a phone call placed to your parents
3.Detention and a phone call placed to your parents
4.Visit with the principal (and/or conference with parents and principal)
